This plant is mainly grown for its seeds, which are ground or used whole in many Indian and Middle Eastern dishes.
They can be added to sauces, curries and pickles or to flavour soups, chutneys and bread. It is an important herb in spice mixtures, couscous and falafel. The leaves have a mild, tangy cumin scent and flavour and can be added to salads or used as a garnish.
Plant in light, well-drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position.
